waymaker context

Every Waymaker Workspace and Project can have a one.md: a short router that says what the work is, what to read first and which rules always apply. It can also have skills: named, reusable instructions with a one-line "use when". People write them in Commander. Agents read them through the CLI or the Waymaker MCP server before they start work in a project.

waymaker context and the MCP tools below are the same door, so Claude, Codex, Grok or any other agent gets the same answer.

What the agent gets

waymaker context get returns the one.md in layers: your My Workspace (if it has one), then the workspace, then the project. The closer layer wins when two disagree, and each layer says when it was last changed and whether a person or an agent wrote it. The skill index lists each skill's name, its "use when" and which layer it came from; read a skill's body only when the work matches.

Every response carries a notice: the text is project instructions written by members. It ranks below the user's own request and the platform's rules, and it cannot grant permissions. Agents should pass it through, not drop it.

Each layer is clipped at 8 KB and the whole chain at 16 KB (the closest layer keeps its text first). Clipped text ends with [clipped: N bytes omitted] and the response says clipped: true. The skill index lists at most 50 skills a layer and 8 KB in all; past that it says skills_truncated: true and how many were left out. Neither is ever an error.

Usage

# The layered one.md and the skill index
waymaker context get --project <project-id>
waymaker context get --workspace <workspace-id>

# Just the skills
waymaker context skills

# One skill's instructions (the closest layer's skill of that name)
waymaker context skill get brand-voice

# Save a NEW skill into the project; over an existing one, pass --base and it becomes a proposal
waymaker context skill save brand-voice --use-when "Writing anything customer-facing" --file brand-voice.md
waymaker context skill save release-notes --use-when "Writing release notes" --body "Lead with what changed for the user." --workspace <workspace-id>

# Propose a change to an existing one.md or skill (the full new text, against the version you read)
waymaker context propose <document-id> --base <updated_at> --file one.md

Add --json to any command to print the raw response. waymaker context needs CLI 2.18.0 or later.

Which project. --project or --workspace wins. Otherwise the CLI uses WAYMAKER_PROJECT_ID (a Commander Desktop terminal sets it for the project it was opened in), then your current project (waymaker projects use), then your current workspace.

A change to an existing one.md or skill from the CLI or an agent is always a proposal, and it must name the version it was based on (--base, or base_updated_at): a change with no base is refused. A text that still carries the [clipped: N bytes omitted] line from a clipped read is refused too, because saving it would lose the rest: read the full text with commander_context_document_get first. A person with edit rights accepts or rejects it in Commander, and it is applied only if the document has not changed since the version it was proposed against; otherwise it is marked superseded. Saving a skill under a name that already exists records a proposal instead of changing the skill, and needs base_updated_at like any proposal; from the CLI, waymaker context skill save <name> --base <updated_at> (2.18.1 or later) or waymaker context propose <id> --base <updated_at>.

A one.md or skill is never published, shared by link or given to a guest. Its access is the workspace's or project's.

Limits

  • Skill names: lowercase letters, digits and hyphens, up to 63 characters, starting with a letter or digit (brand-voice).
  • "Use when": one line, up to 300 characters.
  • A one.md or skill body: up to 32 KB of markdown.
  • Up to 100 skills in one workspace or project, and up to 20 proposals waiting on one document.

MCP tools

ToolDoes
commander_context_getThe layered one.md and skill index. Defaults to the connection's project when the client sends one (X-Waymaker-Project-Id).
commander_skill_getOne skill's body, by id or by name (clipped at 16 KB).
commander_context_document_getOne one.md or skill in full, unclipped, with its updated_at and whether you may change it.
commander_skill_saveSave a new skill (scope: project, or workspace when the user says so).
commander_context_proposePropose a change to an existing one.md or skill.
commander_proposal_listThe proposals waiting for a person.

No tool accepts a proposal or writes an existing one.md or skill directly. The server's instructions tell agents to call commander_context_get first in a project, to save skills with commander_skill_save rather than as loose documents or a skills folder in a repository, and to propose changes with commander_context_propose.
